CEOs, Take 5!

CEO’s live quite a good life – great salary, maximum attention, the power to lead a company in new and exciting ways…but we often forget or choose not to consider just how stressful the role is. So do CEOs need a break? Is it really necessary?

The answer is yes and we’ll tell you why.

CEO’s and high performing individuals think there’s no reason to take time off.  About 31 percent of entrepreneurs work at least 10 hours a day, and 15 percent work every day of the week, according to a Discover Small Business Watch survey. Worse still, the poll also found that 59 percent of respondents define a day off as being available for calls and emails, or working at least part of the day.

They just don’t know how to take a break! In most countries, especially Nigeria, this lifestyle is often glorified. Absurd

As small businesses are often one-person enterprises, taking a break from running it can be difficult but even owners of large corporate businesses are not left out. Switching off and getting some well-earned “R3” (Recoup, Review, Renew) time is vital to keeping yourself fit and healthy, and by extension, your business running smoothly and profitably. Still not convinced? lets go into details on why it’s necessary for business owners to take a break;

Recoup

The most common health issues entrepreneurs face; migraines, depression, anxiety, heart disease, joint and circulation challenges, sleeping disorders, and vision related problems. In extreme cases, some business owners suffer a break down that results in them getting a mandatory break or health leave. It doesn’t have to be this way, taking time out to get enough sleep, eat healthy, engaging in fitness activities, visiting family and friends, doing fun activities with people you love is extremely important for your mental and physical state. I find that most Nigerian entrepreneurs don’t do medical check-up, or if they have, very unsteadily.

Review

Taking a break to review the direction your business is moving towards is essential for optimum success. Honestly ask yourself or your team the important questions: What are you doing right? What are you doing wrong? What works? What doesn’t? Is it in line with our goals? This would provide you with more clarity when you get back to work because you’re sure of your next line of action.

Renew

Taking time out to come up with your business renewal strategies could improve sales productivity and prevent your business from incurring unnecessary loss. A business does not have to be bankrupt or incur a loss to use a renewal strategy, it’s essential while the business is still profitable to make sure it stays profitable.

To successfully be in the right state of mind to attain the soundness of mind and capacity required to review and renew your business and its goals, you need to continuously recoup. It’s encouraged that all entrepreneurs and business leaders take a break. It doesn’t have to be at Isla Mujeres (though you should totally go there)—what matters is that you get away to R3 (recoup, review, renew) and come back driven to continue building your legacy.
